Rigul Trust  is a UK based charity whose aim is to provide funds for the provision of basic health care and education and relief from poverty amongst communities worldwide, and in particular the people of some of the most remote areas of Tibet.

The community of Rigul, Kham, Tibet, is the birthplace of Ringu Tulku Rinpoche and the surrounding areas lie in a very remote area on the high altitude Tibetan plateau at 12,795 feet.

Here the folk don’t have any running water, toilets, gas or solar heating.

The photo shows Rigul during the summer months when some farming can take place, however the winters are exceedingly harsh here.  The survival of most of the community depends upon a nomadic lifestyle to provide enough grazing for the livestock.  In this barren environment the people heavily depend upon their herds for food, transport and clothing.

The nearest land-line phone is 4 hours away (there is sometimes access to mobile phones); the nearest town is 8 hours away; the nearest hospital is 4 days away; the only water supply is the river in the valley for all the villager’s needs.

The clinic is staffed by Dr Chuga and a nurse Ani Choden, and an assistant.  Dr Chuga is trained in Tibetan and some western medicine, and Ani Choden the nurse works with great devotion and compassion.

About 80 people are seen every day, the treatments and consultations are free and medicines are paid for in summer when there is work.

Children and teachers at Ling Gesar School

This school is not only for the Tibetan refugees but caters for all the Indian children in the surrounding poor villages.  It was set up 20 years ago and before 2003 was near to closure due to lack of funds. Since 2003 a charitable trust in Germany has been set up under the guidance of Ringu Tulku: Bodhicharya Huttenried - Dharma-Tor Charitable Trust, Germany.

To help maintain and improve the education and health facilities, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche has also asked Rigul Trust, with its UK charity registration status, to help fund these projects.

Patients awaiting treatment

These people are from the Lingtsang area of Kham, Tibet around the Rigul area, where Ringu Tulku Rinpoche was born. These people are hard working and make a living from the hand crafted goods that they produce. They have a special skill in the making of Bells and Dorjees.

EMERGENCY APPEALS

In addition to our other projects Rigul Trust has also responded to emergency appeals for aid and recovery from natural disasters, such as the devastating Yushu earthquake in Tibetan China and the mudslide and flash flood disaster in Ladakh, a largely Tibetan Buddhist province of India.

Both areas have suffered massive destruction of houses, schools, hospitals and infrastructure as well as great loss of life and injuries.

Tibetan Refugee Community School

The children performed songs and dances from Tibet in their beautiful traditional costumes as part of the school festivities.

The provision of a good education is vital to escape the trap of poverty everywhere in India, but it is of very special importance that these Tibetan children have the opportunity to study the language, religion and customs of their native country in exile, something denied them in their homeland, but essential to a thriving refugee community, benefitting both themselves and also the wider Indian community also.
